Extended Icon Set

Posted 29 December 2005

Those of my readers who are familiar with my first set of icons, may be pleased to know that I have now released an extended version. The Hot Pepper Silver Extended set contains four times as many icons as the Basic set, including the alphabet and all single digit numerals.

Various icons

You get four times the number of icons for a little more than twice the price as the Basic set. And as always, no shipping and no taxes.

Location Poll

Posted 14 December 2005

Either people aren’t reading my most recent post about Canada being able to support a third web development conference, or they really do think Canada can support a third one.

If that’s true, then we should probably know where the most preferred location would be. As a result, I have developed this poll:

The poll will remain open until we have sufficient responses to make the consensus obvious.

UPDATE (03 Jan 2006): This post was listed on digg.com. Digg it.

Canada Web Conference Location

Posted 13 December 2005

Last night, I talked to Justin Kozuch, the executive director of DesignFest ’05. DesignFest was a new media conference held in Toronto in October, and Justin has intention on holding this every year. So it turns out after all that there is a Canadian-based web design conference.

So my new question is two-fold. First, can (should) Canada support another web-design conference? If so, should it still be located in Toronto?

My first impression is that Canada can support another web conference, but that it would need to be be western-based. That being said, I’m not from Toronto, and not very familiar with the market there.

I’m interested in others’ thoughts on this.

Error Messages

Posted 10 December 2005

I registered a couple of domains with registerfly.com this week and went to change the DNS nameservers yesterday. For some unexplained reason, I kept getting an error that said the maximum number of connections had been exceeded. I have no idea what that meat.

This morning I decided to try again and was still getting this error. I then thought I should contact support to see what the problem is, so I clicked on the “24/7 Phone Support” link, and to my surprise, I saw the following note:

Due to upgrades you may not be able to update the DNS of [some domain] names. We expect the upgrade to be complete by Sunday 12/11.

Now why couldn’t they have said this in their error message instead of telling me that the maximum number of connections had been exceeded. Better yet, why not disable the ability to edit nameservers altogether and put in its place the above notice.

Why do things have to be so frustrating.

Calling All Canuck Web Developers and Designers

Posted 9 December 2005

Jay Gilmore, of SmashingRed, and I have been discussing the availability (and/or feasibility) of Canadian-based web design conference. Jay posted on his blog the following:

To all the Canadian developers and designers for the web, I noted a post on [thelist] the mail list of evolt.org wanting to know if their are any Canadian Web Developer /Designer conferences. It seems as if this is an unheard of event. If anyone out there knows of any other event besides Flash In The Can let me know.

If you don’t know of any such events, let me know if you have any interest in a Great White North Web Conference. It could be held anywhere and or we could rotate locations around the country. BTW my own bent is toward standards-based websites using (X)HTML and CSS but XML and other technologies are more than welcome to discuss and suggest a program etc. I really want to push websites as a marketing and sales vehicle as well. This post is a little stream-of-consciousness but I had the impulse to post.

Feel free to comment there or here.

UPDATE (13 Dec 2005): See more here on the feasibility of a Toronto-based conference.

UPDATE (14 Dec 2005): Vote for your preferred location.

Google doesn’t appear to be very standards oriented. I noticed these validation errors while searching for something on Google.

Firefox New Tab Shortcut

Posted 2 December 2005

I discovered a new shortcut in Firefox 1.5 today. In the previous version of Firefox, I used the SuperDragAndGo extension to open links in new tabs. It turns out that in Firefox 1.5, you can drag a link onto the tab toolbar and a new link will open automatically. I love it when Firefox integrates functionality from my favourite extensions (like miniT).

On a related note, dragging selected text into the search box in the Google toolbar will automatically bring up a Google search page for the selected text.
