Is Easter capitalized or not?

Every time a holiday draws near, traffic to my website increases as people try to learn how to properly write holidays. Since Easter is on its way, I thought I should write a post addressing whether we capitalize it or not.

So, should you capitalize Easter?

Well, my capitalization usage in the heading and in the opening sentences probably give it away. Even so, you should capitalize words in basically only 3 situations:

  1. Proper nouns (like Canada, Jane, and Saskatchewan)
  2. First word in a sentence
  3. Main words in a title

Easter is a proper noun, just like Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Canada. As such, it is always capitalized. Same goes for all its component days:

  • Maundy Thursday
  • Good Friday
  • Easter Sunday
  • Eater Monday

On a related note, did you know that Easter is named after Ēostre, a god who pre-mediaeval writers claimed was worshipped by Germanic peoples?
