Saskatchewan Church History
Below are some of the prominent historical events of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Saskatchewan.
- 1918, 28 Jul - Magnus Gudmundsson Isfeld & Elin Joelsson Jonsson first Saskatchewan converts to the Church. Their children Christian, Christina, Joel, Oscar, Albert, Anna & Eliza were baptised at later dates.
- 1925 - Missionaries assigned to Regina.
- 1927 - First LDS Sunday School organised in Regina
- 1930 - Church membership in Saskatchewan at 145
- 1934 - Branch created in Regina
- 1939 - First Saskatchewan meetinghouse dedicated in Regina on Victoria Av.
- 1943 - Sunday School meetings began in Saskatoon
- 1944 - Branch created in Saskatoon
- 1960 - Saskatoon meetinghouse completed at 1429 10th St E
- 1961 - By now, branches also in Moose Jaw, Saskatoon, Swift Current, Prince Albert and Silver Park. Membership at 600.
- 1966 - Branches organised in Yorktown and Carry-the-Kettle
- 1978, 12 Mar - Fort Qu'Appelle Saskatchewan District created with six districts. John P. Livingstone is made first district president.
- 1978, 5 Nov - The Saskatoon and Regina Districts were dissolved and the Saskatoon Saskatchewan Stake was created. Two wards each were created in Saskatoon and Regina while another was created in Moose Jaw.
- 1979 - Family history centre opened in Saskatoon
- 1980 - Church membership at 2,857
- 1987 - Church membership at 4,150
- 1988 - Saskatchewan meetinghouses total nine, serving one stake, one district, five wards and 12 branches
- 1990 - Church membership at 4,200
- 1998, 3 Aug - President Gordon B. Hinckley, President Boyd K. Packer and Elder Kenneth Johnson and their wives visited Regina - President Hinckley announced a temple for Regina.
- 1998, 14 Nov - Elder Hugh W. Pinnock conducted the groundbreaking ceremony for the Regina Saskatchewan Temple
- 1999, 14 Nov - President Boyd K. Packer dedicated the Regina Saskatchewan Temple
- 2000 - Church membership at 4,794
- 2001, 14 Oct - The Regina 4th Branch was dissolved and the Regina University Ward was created.
- 2001, 16 Sep - Fort Qu'Appelle District is disbanded and the remaining branches become part of the stake. The two Regina wards and the Regina 3rd Branch are realigned into the Wascana, Lewvan and Mount Pleasant Wards.
- 2001, 27 Oct - Regina Saskatchewan Stake created. E. Gregg Wood first stake president.
