{"id":11,"date":"2008-05-05T15:59:00","date_gmt":"2008-05-05T21:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hotpepper.ca\/lds\/wordofwisdom\/?page_id=11"},"modified":"2011-06-27T21:20:52","modified_gmt":"2011-06-28T03:20:52","slug":"herbs-and-fruit","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.hotpepper.ca\/lds\/wordofwisdom\/allowed-items\/herbs-and-fruit\/","title":{"rendered":"Herbs and fruit"},"content":{"rendered":"<dl>\n<dt>What does &#8220;in the season thereof&#8221; mean?<\/dt>\n<dd>Lora Beth Larson mentions in the April 1996 Ensign that this \t\t\tphrase refers to &#8220;when they are at their peak nutritionally and \t\t\tin flavor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt>Why doesn&#8217;t the Word of Wisdom mention vegetables?<\/dt>\n<dd>The <cite>Oxford English Dictionary<\/cite> (1961) states that an \t\t\tarchaic usages of the word &#8220;fruit&#8221; is &#8220;vegetable products \t\t\tin general which are fit to be used by men and animals.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt>Are all herbs safe to use?<\/dt>\n<dd>In verse 10, the Lord says that he has only ordained <em>wholesome<\/em> herbs for our use.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt>Does the word &#8220;herbs&#8221; only refer to the <em>eating<\/em> of herbs? \t\tShould herbs be used to treat ailments?<\/dt>\n<dd>Compare verse 12 where the Lord states that animal flesh is \t\t\tfor &#8220;the use of man&#8221; while verse 10 states that all \t\t\twholesome herbs are for &#8220;the constitution, nature, <em>and<\/em> use of \t\t\tman.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Many studies have been done on the health benefits of some herbs. \t\t\tCare should be taken when using such herbs. As with allopathic \t\t\tmedicine, it is quite easy to harm oneself when using excessive \t\t\tquantities, incorrectly combining herbs, or using herbs without \t\t\tknowing their properties. It is recommended that herbs, along with \t\t\tallopathic remedies, be used with skill, research and knowledge.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What does &#8220;in the season thereof&#8221; mean?
