And when it was given as a revelation in 1833, it \t\t\twasn&#8217;t. Since then, other prophets have become more adamant about it \t\t\tnow being a commandment. Today, it is a requirement for receiving \t\t\tentrance into the temple.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt>When did the Word of Wisdom become a commandment?<\/dt>\n<dd>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;In 1851, President Brigham Young proposed to the \t\t\tgeneral conference of the Church that all Saints formally covenant to \t\t\tkeep the Word of Wisdom. This proposal was unanimously upheld by the \t\t\tmembership of the Church. Since that day, the revelation has been a \t\t\tbinding commandment on all Church members&#8221; (E.T. Benson, <cite>Ensign<\/cite>, \t\t\tMay 1983).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/dd>\n<dt>What does conspiring men refer to?<\/dt>\n<dd>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The Lord foresaw the situation of today when motives \t\t\tfor money would cause men to conspire to entice others to take noxious \t\t\tsubstances into their bodies. Advertisements which promote beer, wine, \t\t\tliquors, coffee, tobacco, and other harmful substances are examples of \t\t\twhat the Lord foresaw. But the most pernicious example of an evil \t\t\tconspiracy in our time is those who induce young people into the use \t\t\tof drugs&#8221; (E.T. Benson, <cite>Ensign<\/cite>, May 1983).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/dd>\n<dt>Does this only refer to tobacco, coffee, tea, and alcohol or could it \t\talso apply to pharmaceuticals?<\/dt>\n<dd>It&#8217;s been a common teaching that it refers to the most commonly \t\t\tdiscussed prohibitions of the Word of Wisdom (i.e. coffee, tea, \t\t\ttobacco, alcohol, etc). Ezra Taft Benson made a general statement on this \t\t\tmatter. &#8220;The Lord foresaw the situation of today when motives for \t\t\tmoney would cause men to conspire to entice others to take noxious \t\t\tsubstances into their bodies.&#8221; (E.T. Benson, <cite>Ensign<\/cite>, May 1983).<\/p>\n<p>Some critics of the pharmaceutical industry believe some products can be \t\t\tmore harmful to the body than natural products. And in actuality, that is what the Word of Wisdom is. \t\t\tA code of health for Latter-day Saints.<\/p>\n<p>Verses 5, 7 , 8 &amp; 9 of section 89 of the Doctrine and Covenants \t\t\tspecifically say that alcoholic drinks, tobacco, and hot drinks are not \t\t\tgood for us.
