“Grandnibling”: your sibling’s grandchildren

Sometimes it gets tiring having to say “nieces and nephews” every time you want to refer to your siblings’ children. A word like nibling makes that a bit easier.

But what about the grandchildren of your sibling?

Normally, we might say grandnephew to refer to our sibling’s grandson or grandniece to refer to their granddaughter. But what if you want to refer to all of them? If you think “nieces and nephews” is awkward, you’re going to hate “grandnieces and grandnephews”.

Just use grandniblings. It’s a similar construction to grandniece and grandnephew, and it has the benefit of building off the most popular gender neutral alternative for “nieces and nephews”.

Plus, it has the added benefit of being able to refer to your siblings grandchildren who don’t fit the gender binary. So, it’s shorter, which saves you time, and it’s politically correct, which saves you from getting in trouble at family dinners.
