Can someone explain to me why the heck so many people ask for and/or save logos in JPG (JPEG) format? It makes absolutely no sense to me to use a file format with a lossy compression for saving logos. What’s wrong with EPS, GIF, PNG or even TIFF?

Difference between less and fewer
When I was in the grocery store the other day, I noticed the express checkout line had a sign that read “9 items or less”. Interestingly enough, I have seen the same thing at different stores. This is a problem. Less We use less when we can’t quantify something (i.e. less air, less water, less grass).… Continue reading Difference between less and fewer
Google Acquires Writely
I am so excited about this. InformationWeek announced that Google has acquired online word processing provider, Writely. The announcement has caused Writely to shut down new registrations as they do the migration. I am glad I registered when I did. All my non-work documents are created in Writely. I hope there is tighter integration with… Continue reading Google Acquires Writely
Canadian postal codes
One of the frustrations I have with filling out my address in web forms is the postal code field. Often, it is not a problem, but regularly, there are problems. For example, a form for a US-based company may indicate they accept Canadian addresses, but their zip code field is restricted to five characters (the… Continue reading Canadian postal codes
International
One thing I have found with being on the Internet for ten years is a tendency for a US-centric web. The usage of words such as “foreign” and “international” (as in “our international visitors” or “we offer content in foreign languages”) are often used to mean “not USA”. I do not think this is an… Continue reading International
Old folders
Something I have been thinking about lately is the idea of naming folders that make sense in the future. For example, it does not make sense to name a folder “Word documents”; a year from now you might wonder what kind of Word documents are in that folder. A common technique I have seen people… Continue reading Old folders
GMail and Google Talk
If you haven’t heard, Google announced an integration between Google Talk and GMail. This means Google Talk users will now be able to chat directly in the browser. Even more, GMail users will be able to chat with each other, without having to install Google Talk. A step closer to complete web-based applications. In addition,… Continue reading GMail and Google Talk

I am doing some work on rebranding and I wanted to get an idea of how others perceive me. Please feel free to particpate in this little exercise. In three words (no more, no less), how would you describe Kim Siever? These can be a phrase or three separate adjectives. Alternatively, feel free to email… Continue reading Kim Siever
Web Authoring Statistics
Here is an analysis by Google of over one billion web documents. It shows the most common class names, ids, elements, etc. Very interesting.
6 handy keyboard shortcuts for accented characters (Mac & PC)
My mum’s side of the family is nearly all French (aside from a Scottish line). As a result, I find myself writing in French occasionally. Living in Canada probably contributes to this as well. Most of my French correspondence is usually with my maternal grandmother. When writing in French, I include accented characters where appropriate.… Continue reading 6 handy keyboard shortcuts for accented characters (Mac & PC)
